The launch and orbital phase of the Shuttle is comparable to the Apollo flight. The entry phase, on the other hand, presents many new challenges to a reusable vehicle. To explore this area and provide more detailed data than that required for flight, the Shuttle technology flight instrumentation (TFI) system was proposed. This paper discusses the TFI, which records flight data during the operational phase of the Space Shuttle. It also deals with pertinent background information, such as Shuttle operation, flight verification, and instrumentation provided for the developmental and operational phase.Sponsors
