Various digital coding techniques are discussed from an engineer's and user's point of view. Each technique is displayed in a uniform way which measures performance against the best possible (Shannon) channel. Encoding-decoding complexity and other "system" merits and drawbacks of each technique are discussed. The reader is introduced to coding by drawing analogies with an everyday and familiar coded communication channel - spoken English. Bit, word and block error detection and correction techniques are then presented. Lastly, a concatenated block code scheme which combines these techniques is developed.Sponsors
