Abstract:
Placing out as a system is relatively new but it is rooted in much older and extremely persistent prejudices centered around racial and social inequalities. These inequalities shape who is thought to be an unfit parent and the likelihood of losing one’s child to placement. In order to fully appreciate the scope of these inequalities’ influence, it is vital that an examination of the influence of racial and social inequalities on conceptions of unfit parentage be performed in order to fully understand the nature of placements for children in the United States from 1853-1972.
