Abstract:
A creative exploration of the juxtaposition and relationship between the social constructs of beauty and violence through four fiction pieces ranging between various thematic topics, characters, and styles in a natural progression through time. Starting off with a child protagonist is “Open and Shut,” the story of a powerless young boy’s trauma and how he struggles with his mental illness while surviving in the foster care system. “Kindness” illustrates the story of a teenage farm hand handling how the casual viciousness of rural life affects his relationships and mindset. In turn, “Joke’s on You” covers the awkward upheaval period of transition and discovery in young adulthood as a female comic book store clerk watches the world she knew as a child from within her current stagnant bubble of tension. “Shards Ashore” skips forward past middle age and into the realms of the elderly through a grandmother exploring not only her own progressing age, but that of her child and grandchild.
