Abstract:
A simple rain gauge recorder, driven by collected rainfall, was constructed and tested. One of the main parts of this recorder is a tube, dripping at a constant rate into a chamber containing a flow which drives the chart. To obtain a constant rate of flow in the dripping tube, several designs were tested. The final design requires a glass tube with a small orifice. The water-powered recorder was tested in the laboratory and the calculated error was ±1.8 mm per hour. It is not possible to record the starting hour and day of the rainfall with this recorder. A design for another recorder is presented, using the same basic principle but with a special mechanism for recording the starting hour and day of the rainfall and which can function for long periods of time without maintenance.
