Abstract: The one child policy is considered one of the most radical population policies in the last century. Although the policy was intended to control population growth, it also had social and economic consequences. Despite the national level influences of the policy, this thesis focuses on the influences of the one child policy on individuals in China. In order to collect individuals’ thoughts about the influence of the policy, I conducted 50 interviews in 2016 in China. All respondents are Chinese citizens and have been impacted by the policy in various ways. The interviews show that the one child policy has influenced Chinese people in different ways, on the national level. Individuals’ desire to have children, opinions about having siblings and the sex preference of children seem different among the younger generation born under this policy than for older Chinese.</description>

Abstract: The purpose of this thesis was to develop a best practice approach for improving quality&#xD;
of life in pediatric oncology patients utilizing music therapy as a form of complementary&#xD;
treatment. Incidence of invasive pediatric cancer has increased by twenty-nine percent within the past two decades. Studies suggest that pediatric cancer survivors have slightly lower college attendance rates, are more likely to be unemployed, and not married as young adults. The undesirable social outcomes are products of the disruptive nature of a cancer diagnosis and its impact on psychological health (Kids v Cancer, 2015). Evidence has shown that implementing complementary therapy to improve wellbeing under numerous conditions like pediatric cancer can be successful (Lin et al., 2011). By introducing music therapy into the pediatric oncology setting, the quality of life (QOL) and psychological health of the children can improve. Focusing on QOL and psychological health in pediatric cancer patients allows for normal functioning and development later on in adulthood.</description>

Abstract: Defined as a “system of state and national government [where] each level has some degree of autonomy” (Farber, 2013 page 12), federalism is one of the most important characteristics of the American political system. Although the word federalism never appears in the U.S. Constitution, the Supremacy Clause establishes that the Constitution, federal laws, and treaties constitute "the supreme law of the land" (U.S. Const. art. VII, § 2). In other words, federal laws take precedence over any other forms of law on U.S. soil. Naturally, federalism has a major importance in environmental laws. The goal of this paper is to analyze whether overlapping jurisdiction of the federal system facilitates or obstructs an efficient implementation of a national climate change mitigation strategy for U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. The importance of the environmental theme in recent news places this paper in the center of international debate on environmental regulation. Indeed, although there is a common scientific agreement that climate change and environmental degradations are happening at an alarming rate, national and international legislators have failed to take significant actions to mitigate and adapt to climate change. However, the Paris Climate Change Conference agreement recently ratified by 193 countries, gives new hopes in the fight against climate change. It suggests an imperative that policymakers must take imminent actions to mitigate carbon dioxide emissions, at the local and international level. The Clean Power Plan proposed by President Obama’s administration is a direct effort to comply with the Paris agreement commitment, in order to reduce U.S carbon dioxide emissions.</description>

Abstract: Crustal deformation and associated earthquakes are an integral part of the plate tectonics of Earth, especially in an active subduction zone like Sumatra. Alongside that, mantle rheology governs mantle’s dynamics, yet little is understood about how deformation is distributed at depth. Sumatra allows for a chance to investigate the post-seismic crustal deformation with its frequent and large earthquakes, thereby understanding lithosphere rheology. Utilizing time series data obtained from GPS stations and applying simple analytical logarithmic function, the average post-seismic time was set at 100 days for all the earthquakes. Using Maxwell’s viscosity equation, the asthenosphere beneath Sumatra is calculated to be at 5.53±1.14 × 10¹⁷ 𝑃𝒶𝑠. The asthenosphere viscosity estimated falls within the range of estimated values of other researches, which ranges from 3× 10¹⁷ 𝑃𝒶𝑠 to 1× 10¹⁹ 𝑃𝒶𝑠. The lithosphere rheology of Sumatra might be a result of a thick, viscoelastic slab overlaying a weak, low viscosity asthenosphere. Using the Burger’s model, an inelastic transient viscoelastic deformation of the crust and asthenosphere happen post-earthquake, allowing for a fast relaxation. Large uncertainties remain regarding lithosphere rheology and further research is needed to increase the understanding of subsurface post-seismic deformation.</description>
